Personally, I believe this is the direct result of oversaturation. You got PPVs, FOX cards, FX cards, Fuel cards, probably a Telemundo card or two. Too many events to fill water down these events because the UFC only has so many fighters that can draw in casual fans, sell PPVs, tickets, etc.
Injuries are a part of the game. What sucks is Hendo's injury happened a week and a half before the event. But it amazes me how this is happening at such a higher rate regarding main event matches. GSP comes to mind last October. Dominick Cruz this past summer. Jose Aldo as well.
Chael Sonnen was willing to take the fight. Although let's be honest. This is a no-lose proposal for Chael. He's realistically two wins away at 205 to be truly deserving for a title shot. If Jones had agreed, Sonnen essentially hot shots to the title match and even if he loses, he comes off looking honorable for taking the fight in such short notice.
As for Jones, I'm disappointed. With his talent, he could have steamrolled Sonnen. Plus, all that trash talking these two were having on Twitter, Jones could have shut him up next Saturday. The rumor is that Greg Jackson told him not to take the fight. Fuck that guy. I really don't think there was a significant difference in training for Hendo and training for Sonnen.
As for Dana White, I don't know how much longer this guy can be the face of the organization. Very unprofessional in the conference call today. I get he's pissed at what happened, but throwing Jones under the bus like that looks petty and childish. Dana has to understand the future of his company lies on guys like Jones, who at 25, is already one of the top P4P guys in the sport. I may not agree with Jones' decision, but you don't rip him to shreds like that. He looks real bad in all of this.
Short story long, I feel bad for the undercard. Those guys trained their asses off for next weekend, and now most of them are probably not sure when they're gonna get their next paycheck. Fortunately, there's about 15 UFC events coming up in the next 18 weeks (hyperbole) so they should all find suitable homes.
