The 'Mats are great but it seems they are more well known than the bands mentioned so far in this thread.
Compared to Dillinger, Protest the Hero, Minus the Bear or Alkaline Trio? Nah.
I'd say the Replacements are slightly well-known. They are alternative legends and all.
PTH is awesome. Got into them about a year ago. And so is Dillinger. God DEP just throws so much shit into the mix and it comes out as this awesome jazz-punk-metal fusion.
Bobholly, those two bands are more well-known among my younger metal set. They've really just started to find audiences in the past few years or so.

Here's some more obscure bands I love. These are a bit more rock-flavored...
Holla for the straight edge bands
Saw them open for Disturbed in Missiippi (who btw are nowehere as good live as they are on record...bring on the Disturbed haters). ITM was one of the best acts on that show and I got their shirt. Plus the lead singer is a super sexy tatted girl. And yes I know the video's kinda shitty...blame it on their own record label.
These guys opened for when I saw Godsmack this year. Bought their album, which they were stoked about when I told them on FB (any band that actually chats with their fans on social media is pretty cool in my book).
